In 1528, a magnificent treasure trove of precious ingots was lost to the Spanish Conquistadors and Crown. The outcome of that disastrous shipwreck, however, was the preservation of these extremely rare artifacts that would certainly have been melted down had they reached their destination. In this episode of Mel's Treasure Trove, we examine the treasure of the "Tumbaga" wreck and its significant place in the story of the first Europeans in the New World.
Mel King, President of Big Blue Wreck Salvage, is a maritime historian and one of the country's leading experts in Spanish Colonial numismatics. Our special thanks go to Agustin Garcia-Barneche for his brilliant research, which we consulted during the preparation of this episode. His book is called THE "TUMBAGA" SAGA: Treasure of The Conquistadors.
